Syrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan bilateral cooperation in a number of areas and the strengthening of trade and economic relations during the official visit of the Emirati Minister to Damascus.
Bashar al-Assad said that the relations between Syria and the UAE are historical, so it is normal that they return to their depth, known for many decades. The UAE Foreign Minister, in turn, stressed that the Emirates are interested in strengthening cooperation between the two countries and interaction on various issues.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said that the UAE supports stability in Syria and the sovereignty of the country. In 2021, the UAE advocated the normalization of relations with Damascus and called for the restoration of Syria’s membership in the League of Arab States (LAS). At the end of 2021, the UAE Embassy resumed its work in Damascus. In March 2022, Bashar al-Assad made his first visit to the UAE since the beginning of the conflict in Syria.
In November 2011, the Arab League suspended Syria’s participation in the organization’s activities, considering the use of violence against the opposition unacceptable. And in 2012, the UAE broke off relations with Syria. The UAE did not actively support the government of Bashar al-Assad and advocated his overthrow, but in the past few years they have changed their rhetoric.
