Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of seven 6,000-year-old houses in Henan Province in Central China.

Foundations of houses of various sizes were found in the ruins of Beiyangping in Lingbao City and belong to the middle period of the Yangshao culture, the Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology of Henan Province reported.

The Yangshao culture, which originated 5000-7000 years ago in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, was a Neolithic culture.

The foundation of the largest house is a semi-underground, rectangular structure with rounded corners. Now its area is 172 sq. m., and originally this house occupied an area of almost 250 sq. m.

The deputy Head of the above-mentioned institute, Wei Xingtao, noted that large houses of the middle period of the Yangshao culture were distinguished by complex structures and construction processes, which involved careful design, accurate calculation and strict construction management. This demonstrates that at that time there were already sufficiently developed architectural technologies.

According to Wei Xingtao, a large number of well-preserved charred wooden products were found on the foundation of another large house, which is very rare in prehistoric archaeology.

Wei Xingtao said that the discovery of large houses of the Yangshao period, including those in the ruins of Beiyangping, provides a new foundation for the study of types, designs and technologies of house construction at that time, while laying a solid foundation for the study of the social structure and civilization of the Yangshao period.
