Voting in the elections to the Parliament of Benin took place in a calm atmosphere, there were no attempts to destabilize the situation. This was reported to TASS at the Russian Embassy in the republic.

“The elections were held in a calm atmosphere, there were no attempts to destabilize the situation,” the diplomatic mission noted.

According to the embassy, the votes are being counted now. “The preliminary results of the elections will be announced by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission of Benin on January 11 this year,” it added.

Voting in the elections to the unicameral parliament of Benin began on Sunday with the participation of the main opposition parties, which were not allowed to the previous elections in 2019. The current Parliament is elected for three years, which is one year less than the previous one. This norm is established by the constitutional amendment adopted in 2019, according to which, from January 2026, the term of office of the parliament is set at five years, so that general elections coincide with presidential and municipal ones. Another feature of the current elections is the introduced parliamentary quota for women – 24 seats.

The previous parliamentary elections held in Benin four years ago, to which candidates from opposition parties were not allowed, led to large protest demonstrations accompanied by riots. In the current elections, the leading opposition parties have fielded their candidates in all electoral districts. The previous composition of the parliament was completely pro-presidential, only two parties had representation in it – the Union of Progressives and the Republican Bloc. In the current elections, four parties support the incumbent President of the country, Partis Talon. They are opposed by three opposition parties.
