This is one of the warmest moments of winter in Matsumoto, and it usually takes place at the end of January. Ice sculptors from all over Japan and from all over the world come to the castle with their carving accessories on Friday and create their works of art throughout the weekend. You can come and watch the artists perform their mysteries of mastery and enjoy traditional snacks or Japanese sake. The statues will be on public display until Sunday afternoon.

The city administration invites residents and guests of the land of the Rising Sun to come with their family on Sunday morning. “Come early to avoid photographers and crowds – and look at the finished sculptures against the magnificent backdrop of Matsumoto Castle and the Northern Alps. Music, food and entertainment for children make this time special for the whole family,” says the official website of Visit Matsumoto.
