Every year, on the second Monday of January, young Japanese celebrate the Day of Coming of Age.
Traditionally, those who turn 20 years old between April 2, 2023 and April 1, 2024 had to take part in the celebrations. But this year a new law came into force lowering the age of majority to 18 years. Many municipalities have held separate events for 20-year-olds and for 18-19-year-old boys and girls.
Outfits are prepared in advance for this day. Girls dress in furisode — a traditional Japanese kimono with long sleeves for unmarried women and brides. As a rule, such an outfit is skillfully made and sewn from expensive beautiful material, and therefore its cost can sometimes reach 8-10 thousand dollars. Therefore, they are often inherited or rented.
The hair is laid in the salon in luxurious intricate hairstyles, decorating them with flowers. The image is sometimes complemented with a fur cape or muff, because the weather on this day does not spoil the warmth.
The guys also wear a traditional Japanese haori jacket and long wide trousers in a hakama fold. But more often today they can be seen in classic suits of European cut.

Всего лишь один день по такому случаю — это очень мало, и, кроме того, у молодежи существует традиция на День совершеннолетия возвращаться в родной город в родительский дом и праздновать совершеннолетие вместе с родными и друзьями детства.
В 1998 году был принят закон, по которому с 2000 года праздник перенесли с фиксированной даты на второй понедельник января. Молодежь получила законные три дня на празднование, а все японцы стали называть день «счастливым понедельником».
