Newly appointed Secretary General of the CSTO Imangali Tasmagambetov is presented to the CSTO Secretariat and members of the Permanent Council of the Organization

Imangali Nurgalievich Tasmagambetov, appointed by the Collective Security Council of the CSTO to the post of Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, was presented on January 10, 2023 by the Chairman of the Committee of Secretaries of Security Councils (KSSB), State Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Volfovich.

“The candidacy of Imangali Nurgalievich Tasmagambetov for this high post was nominated by the leadership of Kazakhstan and approved by the Decision of the Collective Security Council of the CSTO on November 23, 2022. He will serve for three years until December 31, 2025,” Alexander Volfovich said. He noted that And.Tasmagambetov has held various government positions in the Republic of Kazakhstan over the years, was Assistant to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Head of the Presidential Administration, headed the Government of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education and Culture, and was also the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Russia.

“I would especially like to note the experience of Imangali Nurgalievich in the military and diplomatic sphere, which will certainly be in demand during the leadership of the CSTO, whose key task is to ensure collective security. His rich experience as a politician and statesman allows us to be confident in the successful implementation of the responsible mission entrusted to him by the CSTO Secretary General. This will give a new impetus to our Organization in today’s difficult times, increase the effectiveness of its response to modern challenges and threats, as well as strengthen the role and place of the CSTO in the system of international organizations responsible for maintaining regional security,” the Chairman of the CSTO stressed.

Addressing the members of the Permanent Council and Deputy Secretaries General, the Chief of the Joint Staff and heads of departments of the CSTO Secretariat, Imangali Tasmagambetov said that the appointment to the post of Secretary General of the CSTO is a great honor and a great responsibility for him. “I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to the heads of the CSTO member states for the trust to head the working structure of the Organization. The world is witnessing major geopolitical challenges, and very complex political, economic and other problems have to be solved. No less difficult tasks are facing the CSTO. All these challenges and problems affect the key role of our Organization, its authority and ability to be an effective mechanism for ensuring regional security. Its further prestige and effectiveness depend on us. Despite all the challenges, I am deeply convinced that there is no alternative for the CSTO, it is capable of solving the tasks assigned to it,” said the new Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Imangali Tasmagambetov.

There was also a bilateral meeting between Imangali Tasmagambetov and Alexander Volfovich. The sides discussed topical issues of international and regional security, exchanged views on the situation in the CSTO area of responsibility, discussed current challenges and threats in the Eastern European, Caucasian and Central Asian regions of collective security. Special attention was paid to the coordination of efforts to implement the CSTO’s priority areas of activity in 2023.
