Every year, more than 60,000 Norwegians and hikers travel around Besseggen. Now the trail has a new status. On Monday, the Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency awarded Besseggen the status of a national tourist trail.

– Thanks to the new status, we will avoid excessive littering and other traces of human presence that negatively affect the diversity of nature and impressions of it. The data also show that the number of accidents and injuries decreases when a place is assigned the status of a National Tourist Trail,” says the Minister of Climate and Environment Espen Barth Eide.

The assignment of the status will also entail the allocation of funds (300 thousand crowns annually), including for the construction of emergency shelters, the service of mountain rangers and the preparation of trails.
