The interconnection of energy systems is part of India’s Act East (India’s Act East Policy), aimed at improving economic ties with Southeast Asian countries.

India and Myanmar are negotiating the modernization of power transmission networks, which may be further extended to Thailand as part of India’s larger plan to connect the national electric networks of various South Asian countries.

“We have warm relations with Myanmar, and the negotiations were positive. The plan is to allow Myanmar to get electricity from certain points in India. It is planned that the technical team will visit Myanmar in the near future,” said one of the officials, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity.

The second official said that a preliminary report has been prepared. “It will be extended to Thailand. India is ready to build the entire project of interconnected networks,” the official added.

In South Asia, India is establishing connections with the national power grids of neighboring states. As part of the Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) sub-regional initiative, India has already established connectivity to the networks of its member countries.
