Chinese researchers have presented a method for diagnosing the three most common complications in pregnant women – preeclampsia, diabetes and intrahepatic cholestasis. The technology for detecting diseases is based on the analysis of blood biomarkers – an article with the first results of the study was published in the journal Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology.

Professor Xuan Rongrong and his colleagues conducted a study among 112 female volunteers. According to the results of the tests, the scientists were able to prove that the development of all three complications during pregnancy was accompanied by changes in the concentration of seven short fatty acids. The test developed by the researchers makes it possible to determine the amount of acids in the blood and, consequently, take preventive measures for the occurrence of diseases.

The clinical trials of the test carried out to this point in time showed high results: it was possible to predict the development of diabetes and preeclampsia in 76% of cases, and choleostasis – in almost 97%. Scientists hope that their discovery will have a positive impact on the health of women during pregnancy.
