Munishwar Chandar Dawar, who works in the state of Madhya Pradesh (Central India), was awarded the Padma Shri, one of the country’s highest awards. The 77-year–old doctor has been providing assistance to that in need for only 20 rupees for several decades (at the current exchange rate – 17 rubles).

“My teacher once told me that the medical profession is to serve people, not suck their blood. These words changed the direction of my life, and that’s why I started treating people for a minimum fee,” Dawar was quoted by Hindustan Times.

The doctor also adds that work and patience are the key to success, which in turn becomes the basis for respect. “Hard work pays off, even if it doesn’t happen right away. This award is the result of the blessing of people,” the Embassy quotes the winner of the award.

*Padma Shri is the fourth most important of the state awards of India, awarded to citizens who have contributed to one of the areas of society (ranging from art to medicine).
