The Museum of the Academy of Arts invites visitors to the exhibition “Izborsk in the mirror of the Russian soul”, which will feature the works of Pavel Dmitrievich Melnikov. The exhibition will be held in the city of Pushkin in the House-Museum of Pavel Chistyakov. The exhibition opened on March 16 and will last until April 16.

Павел Дмитриевич Мельников

Pavel Dmitrievich Melnikov was born in Izborsk, Pskov region. The future artist loved painting from childhood, but did not have the opportunity to study it professionally: early adulthood, helping the family with household chores, starting work in paper production. It seemed that there would be no place for art in Melnikov’s life. However, Pavel Dmitrievich continued to plunge into his favorite topic with interest: he studied books on art history, attended art exhibitions, tried his hand at painting.

In 1941, the novice creator managed to organize his first exhibition, but even then Melnikov’s artistic plans were interrupted – the Great Patriotic War began. The artist spent 3 years on it, during which he participated in the defense of Tallinn in 1941, as well as in the Battle of Velikiye Luki in 1943. Melnikov received several wounds and after operations and recovery returned to his hometown, where he resumed his favorite craft, but now painting has become not just a hobby, but the meaning of life.

Melnikov devoted his work to the Izborsk land: the artist’s repertoire includes at least 50 landscapes of the fortress and its surroundings. Melnikov’s paintings depict authentic architecture and subtly convey the atmosphere of the ancient city: leaning fences, wooden huts and snow–white temples – monuments of hoary antiquity. The artist paid no less attention to the classical landscape: Izborsk appears on his canvases at different times of the year, which allows you to enjoy the artistic diversity. And the colors used by the artist and the play with light evoke a fabulous, somewhat epic atmosphere on the canvases, which shows the painter’s reverent attitude to national culture, and, of course, to his small homeland.

Russian Russian artist Pavel Melnikov’s works show the native Russian, touching appearance of places dear to the heart, and also remind of the cultural value and historical heritage of the oldest Russian town of Pskov land.

Современный Изборск

It is for this that the Izborians love and remember the artist, which is why the exhibition “Izborsk in the mirror of the Russian soul” is worth visiting and getting acquainted with the heritage of national talent.
