March 21 – Independence Day of the Republic of Namibia

Today is a memorable date in the history of Namibia: exactly 33 years ago, the new authorities of the country, elected during the first Presidential and Parliamentary elections, declared the independence of their country.

For a long time, Namibia was under colonial pressure from Western states – back in the late XIX century. It came under the German protectorate and for the next 30 years was called German Southwest Africa. The first resistance movements arose back in 1904-1907, when local residents rebelled against foreign authorities. However, the systematic struggle began in 1960, and was marked by the creation of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO; later became the main parliamentary force).

Today marks the date of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Namibia, which was noted during a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“It is symbolic that Independence Day coincides with another important date – the 33rd anniversary of the establishment of Russian-Namibian diplomatic relations. Our country was one of the first to extend a helping hand to the Namibian people in the struggle for independence and self-determination,” she said.

The representative of the ministry also noted that both countries currently cooperate in various fields, including agriculture, mining and diamond complexes, hydropower, etc.
