On retaliatory measures against Sweden

On May 25, the Swedish Ambassador to Russia, M. Mard, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, who was told that, taking into account the confrontational course pursued by Sweden towards the Russian Federation, the Russian side decided to terminate the activities of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Gothenburg from September 1, 2023. At the same time, the head of the Swedish diplomatic mission was informed about the withdrawal by the Russian side from September 1, 2023 of its consent to the activities of the Swedish Consulate General in St. Petersburg.

As an openly hostile step on the part of Stockholm, the announcement on April 25, 2023 of five employees of Russian foreign institutions in Sweden “persona non grata” was characterized. These actions of the Swedish authorities have further aggravated the situation in bilateral relations, which have reached an unprecedented low level, including as a result of the ongoing Russophobic campaign in Sweden.

The Swedish Ambassador was informed that the Russian side, as a retaliatory measure, decided to declare “persona non grata” five Swedish diplomats, including three employees of the office of the Defense attache at the Swedish Embassy in Moscow. They are ordered to leave the Russian Federation within the same time frame that was set aside by the Swedish authorities for the departure of our employees.
