Kyrgyzstan expects to export electricity to Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in the future. The Minister of Energy of the Republic Taalaibek Ibrayev said this on Wednesday to the TASS news agency on the sidelines of the second Eurasian Economic Forum.

According to the agency, Ibrayev noted that membership in the EAEU will provide Kyrgyzstan with the opportunity to export its electricity to other countries of the union.

“Cooperation [with Russia in the energy sector]is eternal and long, because the time will come when we will start exporting electricity to Russia. This is in the near future,” he said.

In his speech at the forum, the Minister pointed out that Kyrgyzstan is able to generate approximately 142-145 billion kWh of electricity annually, but today uses only “10-12% of its resources.” Including for this reason, there is a periodic shortage of electricity in the republic, which “reaches 3 billion kWh” per year. It is necessary to fill the shortage of electricity by importing it from some neighboring republics and Russia.

We also add that the Ministry of Energy is already hatching plans for the supply of electricity from the Kyrgyz Republic to China. The agency even signed an agreement with the Chinese company TBEA for the construction of 220-500 kilowatt-hour power lines in the PRC in the future.
