The secrets of the art of carpet weaving were carefully preserved by Turkmen women and passed on from mother to daughter for many centuries.

In the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, on May 28, celebrations on the occasion of the Turkmen Carpet Holiday unfolded at the National Museum of Man—made carpets. Here, as part of the festive program, bright performances of masters of art took place, as well as an exhibition of unique handmade carpets and carpet products collected from all corners of Turkmenistan, the correspondent of CentralAsia.news in Ashgabat reports.

First of all, it should be noted that Turkmen women have been passing the art of carpet weaving from mother to daughter for many centuries, improving it more and more with each period. From generation to generation, passing on invaluable knowledge, they brought the secrets of this difficult and time-consuming skill to their contemporaries.

According to an ancient Turkmen legend, the technology of performing the traditional filigree pattern was sent down from heaven a long time ago to a Turkmen girl who fell asleep at the machine. A magical peri flew to her in a dream and showed her how to weave a flawless in shape and amazing in beauty gel.

In independent Turkmenistan, the sphere of national carpet weaving has received a powerful impetus to development. On the part of the state, all the necessary conditions were created for the creation of new original and subtle canvases that are different from each other. Thanks to unprecedented measures, Turkmen carpets are widely popularized in the world.

To fully understand the meaning and meaning of the carpet for the Turkmen society, it is necessary to recall that the Turkmen carpet is one of the symbols that unite the people into a single nation. Five of the most basic and traditional carpet patterns — akhalteke, salyr, ersary, chovdur and yomut are placed on the state banner and coat of arms of Turkmenistan.

At the same time, this Turkmen folk art has made a meaningful contribution to the world treasury of universal values. The Head of State Serdar Berdimuhamedov, in his address to the skilled carpet-makers of the country, made a special emphasis on the fact that the national carpet-making of Turkmenistan is included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

“And this fact clearly shows that the products of our skilled craftsmen are recognized as man—made monuments of fine art,” the President of Turkmenistan stressed.

In accordance with the established tradition, on the eve of the holiday in Ashgabat, the XXIII conference of the World Association of Connoisseurs of Turkmen Carpet “Turkmen carpet is the soul of Turkmens” gathered scientists and experts in the field of evaluation of unique specimens of ancient Turkmen craft.

The current festive exposition was visited by members of the Government of Turkmenistan, heads of ministries and departments, representatives of the diplomatic corps and international organizations, guests of the capital, as well as foreign journalists.

Carpets made in various genre directions from all five regions of the country, national jewelry and objects of decorative and applied art were widely presented at the colorfully decorated stands. An improvised Turkmen village was also recreated here.
