Comment by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, M.V.Zakharova, in connection with the reaction of the Moldovan side to Russia’s intention to improve consular services for Russian citizens living in Pridnestrovie

The Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the “clarification for the media” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova dated February 16, which expresses “deep disappointment” in connection with the intention of the Russian side to send additional staff to the point of exit consular services in Tiraspol. According to Moldovan colleagues, this “contrasts with the official position of the Russian Federation regarding support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the Republic of Moldova.

Such a statement is surprising. It is unclear how the desire to improve consular services for Russian citizens, of whom more than 200 thousand live in Transnistria, can “deserve regret.” We are talking about such important actions as the renewal of passports, the legalization of documents, notarization, without which it is now impossible to realize the rights and freedoms of citizens. There is no politics in this, and even more so there is no violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.

We call on the Moldovan partners to focus on solving practical issues of cooperation between our countries, as well as on giving positive dynamics to the Transnistrian settlement process.

For our part, we are ready to build constructive, pragmatic and friendly relations between our countries in the interests of their citizens.
