On February 18, in New York, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Vershinin met with Permanent Representatives of Venezuela S. Moncada, China Zhang Jun and Syria B. Sabbagh.

The meeting with the Permanent Representative of Venezuela was devoted to strengthening the interaction of our states on international platforms, including within the framework of the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter, in which S.V. Vershinin and S. Moncada are national coordinators. The parties agreed to intensify efforts within the framework of the State Duma in order to jointly counter attempts to undermine the goals and principles of the Charter of the world Organization and replace them with “rules” adopted in narrow formats, as well as to offset the effect of illegal unilateral coercive measures introduced bypassing the UN Security Council.

During the conversation with Zhang Jun, a detailed exchange of views was held on ways to deepen cooperation between Russia and China at the UN and other international platforms. Both sides stressed the urgency of further coordination of actions to strengthen security in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as on the reform of the UN Security Council, the protection of the principles and objectives of the UN Charter and the foundations of a multipolar world order, including within the framework of the State Duma.

Following the discussion of the situation inside and around Syria with Permanent Representative B. Sabbagh, it was agreed to continue close coordination between our two delegations when considering various aspects of Syrian issues at the UN site.
