On February 23, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov received the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria G. Pedersen.

A detailed discussion took place on the prospects for advancing the political process, led and carried out by the Syrians themselves with the assistance of the UN, as spelled out in UN Security Council resolution 2254. In this regard, they stressed the need to continue the work of the Constitutional Committee, established in pursuance of the decision of the Congress of the Syrian National Dialogue in Sochi and being the only platform for direct inter-Syrian dialogue. The general opinion was expressed that achieving a lasting and long-term settlement in Syria is possible only on the basis of restoring the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the country.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on the current situation “on the ground” in Syria against the background of the growing terrorist threat and the risks of destabilization in areas beyond the control of the Syrian Government. The importance of increasing comprehensive humanitarian assistance to all Syrians in need without discrimination and politicization was noted, including in the interests of alleviating socio-economic problems and overcoming the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The key role in this is to ensure the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2585, which includes, in addition to a cross-border mechanism, the establishment of sustainable humanitarian supplies to all parts of Syria from Damascus, the implementation of projects for the early restoration of civilian infrastructure and the mitigation of illegal unilateral restrictive measures.
