Russia and Azerbaijan discussed preparations for the UN Climate Conference in Baku

The parties agreed to intensify working contacts at all levels ahead of the event.

Ruslan Edelgeriev, Special Representative of the President of Russia on Climate Issues, and Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, discussed at a meeting with Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, preparations for the conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held on November 11-22 in Baku.

“The key negotiating issues of the upcoming session of the SOR29 were considered. Russia and Azerbaijan stressed the importance of climate issues in the context of global efforts to ensure sustainable development. The parties agreed to intensify working contacts at all levels ahead of the event,” the Russian diplomatic department said in a statement.

Earlier it was reported that during his visit to Moscow, the Azerbaijani minister discussed preparations for the SOR29 with Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian government Alexei Overchuk.
“The talks discussed topical issues of environmental cooperation between the two countries and the preparation of the participation of the Russian delegation in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is scheduled to be held in the Republic of Azerbaijan in November 2024,” the message on the website of the Russian government said.
The meeting was attended by Ruslan Edelgeriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on Climate Issues, Igor Shumakov, Head of Roshydromet, and representatives of the federal ministries of the two countries.
Recall that the UN Climate Change Conference is held annually in order to find out what has been done over the past year to achieve the goals of reducing emissions into the atmosphere and keeping the average annual temperature increase within 1.5 degrees Celsius.
In addition, the conference participants set new goals for achieving climate neutrality every year, as well as discuss ways and methods of switching to “green” technologies and the economy.
