President of Tajikistan E. Rahmon addressed the International Conference on the International Decade of Action ‘Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028’

On June 11, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part and spoke at the Third International Conference on the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028”.Emomali Rahmon, first of all, welcomed the heads of government delegations and reputable organizations in Tajikistan and wished success to the work of the conference.

Expressing his opinion on Tajikistan’s global initiatives, the President of the country stressed: “Together we were able to put the topic of water at the center of global development negotiations and rally the world community around this extremely important topic.”

Emomali Rahmon considered the measures taken in this direction still insufficient and made proposals to find new ways to achieve the goals set.

The Head of State, along with the tasks of fulfilling the commitments undertaken by countries and relevant organizations within the framework of the United Nations Water Conference, considered it necessary to make efforts to implement new, effective actions and initiatives in this direction.

President Emomali Rahmon called the use of the Dushanbe Water Process as a platform for tracking the results of the United Nations Water Conference one of the commitments under the water action agenda and expressed Tajikistan’s readiness to further expand this process.

The world community’s support for Tajikistan’s climate initiatives through 10 UN General Assembly resolutions confirms our country’s active and key role in promoting the water and climate agenda at the international level.

It was emphasized that Tajikistan, despite the abundant reserves of fresh water, including glaciers, lakes and rivers, pays special attention to water-related problems. In this regard, one of the priorities of our state’s policy has become the topic of water resources, their rational and sustainable use.

The Leader of the nation noted that the country’s activities to promote the water issue in the global climate agenda is another aspect that deserves attention.

The Head of State stressed that we are also implementing effective measures to address water issues at the national and regional levels.

In particular, the “Water Sector Reform Program for 2016-2025” is being implemented to fully transition to integrated water resources management.

The development of the “National Water Strategy for the period up to 2040”, the “State Program of drinking water supply and sanitation for the period up to 2032”, the creation of a unified water information system and the “Program of natural landscaping of the country up to 2040” were called important steps by our country towards solving water and climate problems.

Emomali Rahmon noted that Tajikistan’s programs and strategies in this direction also include issues related to improving the culture of rational and economical use of water, as well as the introduction of new irrigation technologies.

“We are redoubling our efforts to transition to a green economy, and water resources play a key role in achieving this goal,” said the President of the country, dear Emomali Rahmon.

During his speech, the Leader of the Nation drew the attention of the conference participants to another topical issue – the problem of glaciers, which are one of the main sources of fresh water.

It was noted that our initiative to declare 2025 the “International Year of Glacier Conservation” has received full support and, according to the relevant resolution of the General Assembly, starting next year, March 21 will be celebrated annually as “World Glacier Day”.

In this regard, the President of the country pointed out that Tajikistan was one of the first to make its financial contribution to the activation of the “International Trust Fund for the Protection of Glaciers.”

“In order to further strengthen this important issue, we, together with our partners, decided to promote the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly on the declaration of the Decade of Polar Science and Glaciology,” the Head of State noted.

At the end of his speech, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon expressed confidence that the results of today’s conference will make a worthy contribution to solving problems related to water and climate.

After Emomali Rahmon’s informative speech, the heads of delegations of governments, international and regional organizations and institutions, as well as a number of high-level experts, including Zeljka Cvijanovic, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dennis Francis, President of the UN General Assembly, Chiwenga Constantino, First Vice President of Zimbabwe, Esperanza Dacoshta, Vice President of Angola,President of Zambia Mutale Nalumango, Director General of UNESCO Audrey Azule, President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council Paula Narvez Oyeda, Prime Minister of Gabon Raymond Sima, President of the Islamic Development Bank Muhammad Al-Jasser, UN Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and World Bank Global Director for Global Water Experience Saraj Kumar Jha, who praised Tajikistan’s global initiatives to address water and climate issues.
