The international photo contest “Mother and Children in national costumes” was presented at the jubilee X Ethnofestival “Russia – Consonance of Cultures” in Gatchina on August 24, 2024 with the support of the Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Leningrad Region
The Leningrad region was represented at the 5th anniversary International Photo Contest “Mother and Children in national costumes” by four families from different districts – Vsevolozhsky, Kingisepp and Podporozhsky.
Each photo work is the work of more than one person: it is the recreation of traditional costume designs, and the choice of an image, and the shooting itself.
The Gromov family from the Kingisepp district – a mother, two sons and a daughter presented Russian folk costumes very convincingly. The outfits of one of the indigenous small-numbered peoples, the Veps, were shown by mother Anastasia Krasilnikova and her son. The whole of Russia was introduced by the Rostovikov family from the Kingisepp district to how the Izhora national costume traditionally looked, and the Izhorians are another indigenous small-numbered people of our region. And representatives of the Vsevolozhsky district of Nikolashkin chose Tatar costumes for the competition.
All these finalists’ works could be seen at a special stand dedicated to the International Photo Contest “Mother and Children in national costumes” at our anniversary X ethnofestival “Russia – Harmony of Cultures” in Gatchina on August 24.
At the stand, it was also possible to get acquainted with the works of finalists from the regions who came to support our festival. Karelia was represented by the Egorov family, the Komi Republic – mother and children of Gushikhina. The Kolyada family from the Murmansk region showed very interesting costumes of the Ilmen Slavs. We saw how the Nenets dressed thanks to the Nechei Sarotetto family. And the Northern Slavs were represented by Rogozin’s mother and children from the Arkhangelsk region.
The project of the International Photo Contest “Mother and Children in national costumes” is designed to demonstrate the national flavor of the peoples of Russia by expressing the diversity of their nation’s culture through national costume. The 2024 competition takes place in the year of the Family, which makes it particularly relevant. The photo contest is organized by the International Women’s Union. The international photo contest “Mother and Children in national costumes” has been in existence since 2019. In 2022, the project entered the year of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia. The photo contest was presented in digital format at the SPIEF in June 2023. The 5th anniversary photo contest is being held under the auspices of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO with the support of the Federal Agency for Nationalities of Russia and the Moscow City branch of the All-Russian Public Organization “Russian Geographical Society”.
