Russian cinema and animation presented in the Middle East

On November 23-24, in Dubai, at one of the largest content markets in the MENA region – DICM 2022 – ROSKINO company organized a joint stand of the Russian film industry Russian Content Worldwide.

Fourteen companies have provided over 60 projects to international representatives from the UAE, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Lebanon, Bahrain and other countries, including a new family comedy “Cheburashka” with a cartoon character beloved by millions of viewers; a detective series “The Negotiator”, sports dramas “Eleven Silent Men” and “Master”, historical projects “Tobol”, “Ekaterina. Impostors” and “Union of Salvation. Time of Anger” and many others.

All Media (a START company), online cinemas START and KION, Production company “Wednesday”, NTV TV company, Sovteleexport (official distributor of VGTRK), Pimanov and Partners, Soyuzmultfilm, GK “Riki”, animation studio presented their films, series and animation in Dubai “Steam Locomotive”, media holding “Digital Television”, “Odin Media”, “X-Media Digital”, RUSSIAN film company.

As part of the DICM 2022 market, two presentations in the format of showcases will also take place: the first will be dedicated to Russian animation, the second to films and TV series. Russian content will be presented to international buyers by ROSKINO CEO Inna Shalyto: “For the second year in a row, the Russian industry participates in the DICM market, highly appreciating the potential of this platform for the presentation of Russian modern content, as well as for getting acquainted with the trends of the media industry in the Middle East and North Africa market, studying the audience. Considering that DICM is held in Dubai, which is one of the centers of the content industry in the Middle East, we appreciate the opportunity to organize a business dialogue with key players of the UAE and the entire MENA region. We took into account our first experience of participating in the DICM market last year, when we got to know the MENA region and audience preferences more closely, and we plan to bring content of those genres that are most popular in these countries: these are family films, animation (both entertaining and educational), historical dramas, content for teenagers (youth dramas and comedies) and others. As in India, where we comprehensively presented Russian content at the Russian Film Festival in Mumbai and at the Film Bazaar film market, here in Dubai our film industry will also be widely represented – both in the professional environment in the DICM 2022 market, and among the audience as part of the days of Russian cinema, which will be held in Dubai immediately after the end of DICM, from November 25 to 27.”

In June 2022, the Dubai DICM Content Market was recognized as the best annual media industry event in the Middle East and North Africa. On November 23-24, it will bring together over 600 international representatives from more than 60 countries. The Russian industry will be represented at DICM for the second year in a row: in 2021, the Russian Content Worldwide stand brought together ten companies, for many of which this was the first entry into the Middle East and North Africa market.

The official distributor of VGTRK content, Sovteleexport, has been presenting the holding’s content in the Middle East and North Africa for several years. In this market, the distributor, first of all, is betting on the third season of a large–scale historical drama about Catherine the Great – “Catherine. Impostors.” In Dubai, the company will also present a modern mystical detective story “Dreamcatcher” and a documentary film “Top Point” about scientific research of the planet Earth from space. Earlier, according to the results of previous deals, the rights to dramas about strong female characters were sold: the TV series “Anna Karenina”, “Parental Right” and others. OSN TV channel has included the dramas “Einstein. The Theory of love”, “Sofia” and “Zuleikha opens her eyes”. A dramatic story about the fate of Zuleikha was shown on the state satellite TV channel Sharjah TV.

The production company “Wednesday” relies on the criminal drama “Chimera”: based on the company’s sales experience, dynamic action projects are popular in the Arab region. Earlier, “Wednesday” sold two seasons of the TV series “Method” to the territory of MENA. In the DICM market, the company’s representatives aim to better understand the local market, audience preferences and overall reaction to Russian content.

The online cinema START is now finalizing the first deals for the sale of format rights in North Africa and the Middle East. In parallel, work is underway on new projects that may be close to viewers from the countries of this region. One of the ready—made similar projects is the romantic comedy “Pirogova IP”, which will be available to partners in English dubbing. The series is interesting to buyers not only as a finished product, but also as a format for adaptation. In the Dubai market, START will offer buyers projects in different genres: from classical drama to a great historical epic: they all take into account the peculiarities of the regional market in terms of themes and storylines, and may arouse interest among local players.

The company All Media (a START company) has been cooperating with distributors for several years, who regularly release films from the company’s catalog on the territory of MENA. The cinemas of the region have already shown, among others, the family comedy “Superbrowy. The People’s Avengers”, the large-scale historical saga “Tobol”, the action drama “Save Leningrad”. In the DICM market, the company relies on the family comedy “Cheburashka”, the adventure fantasy “Little Red Riding Hood”, the expected action “Litvyak” and the thriller “Live Broadcast”. Also, All Media will present a film of its own production – the thriller “Tiber”. The company plans to close deals on the above-mentioned films in key territories of the region.

Pimanov & Partners is counting on the success of the sports drama about football “Eleven Silent Men”, which was released in 2022. The plot is based on the story of the legendary Dynamo Moscow tour, which flew to the UK in 1945 to play a series of matches with the best British teams, including Chelsea and Arsenal. As noted in the company, the film will be especially interesting to football fans, since all the sports scenes were filmed during the actors’ real game of football. Also, the interest of international buyers from the MENA region in this sports drama can also contribute to the World Cup, which is taking place these days in Qatar. In addition, the company’s representatives hope that the fantastic comedy “Dolly the Sheep was evil and died early” will also not leave Arab buyers indifferent, since the film, first of all, tells about the complexities of relationships between different generations – a universal topic for an international audience. Also, at DICM 2022, Pimanov and Partners will present two documentaries “Maria Zakrevskaya” and “June 1941. Without a secret stamp.”

Among the projects of the NTV channel in the DICM 2022 market are four action–packed series. The sports drama “Master”, which centers on the story of the strongest KAMAZ-Master team, the best autopilots in the world in the class of sports trucks and the historical detective “Bezsonov”, whose action takes viewers to St. Petersburg at the end of the 19th century, will take part in a showcase of Russian content. There will also be an action-packed melodrama “Ambulance”, a detective “Killer” telling the story of a former policeman who embarked on a path of revenge, and other projects.

KION online cinema in Dubai will present a large-scale historical drama “Union of Salvation. The Time of Anger” about the Decembrist uprising of 1825, the comedy drama “Kidney” and the family comedy “Ivan Semenov-school commotion!”.Soyuzmultfilm will bring to DICM “Chink: The Tailed Detective”, the world’s first full-length animated film created entirely on a game engine, “Monsters”, “Secrets of Honey Valley”, “Well, Wait!”, “The Adventures of Petya and the Wolf”. Earlier in the MENA market, the company sold (through the distributor Cyber Group) the animated series “Orange Cow”.

The animation studio “Locomotive” in the DICM market will be represented by three animated series for which it is looking for co–production partners – “Chik-Chirikino” (in production), “Cosmoport” and “Byaka the Cat and the Good Boy” (under development). According to the company’s representatives, this market provides an excellent opportunity to establish partnerships in the MENA region, as it has a rich creative and business potential. The company hopes that DICM will help to find new creative ideas and projects at the junction of European and Middle Eastern cultures.

The Digital Television media holding will present flagship projects – “Mi-mi-bears”, “Fairy Patrol”, “Kitty-Dogs” and “Leo and Tig” (produced by the animation studio “Locomotive”). The company has been working with the MENA region for a long time.

X-Media Digital expects that the attention of buyers can be attracted by such animation projects of the company as the animated series Princess play time and “Cars, cars”. The company intends to find partners in the MENA region and is interested in cooperation with TV channels, online cinemas and independent distributors.
