About Russia’s plans to reopen its representative office in the capital of Libya, as well as to launch the work of the Consulate General in Benghazi (approx. – the second largest city in the country), said Mikhail Bogdanov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Middle East. The words about Moscow’s plans to return the diplomatic presence were uttered on February 26 in an interview with TASS.

“We plan to resume the work of the Russian Embassy in Tripoli in the near future. Moreover, we are planning to open our consulate General in Benghazi. We hope that the restoration of our diplomatic presence in Libya will contribute to the promotion of Russian economic interests in this country,” the representative of the Ministry said.

Bogdanov also noted that the reopening of the embassy might allow promoting Russia’s economic interests in Libya.

Recall that the representative office of the Russian Federation was evacuated from the country after the 2013 event. Then the building of the diplomatic mission in Tripoli was attacked, which was eventually stopped by Libyan army units. Despite the fact that there were no casualties from the incident, the Libyan authorities admitted that they could not guarantee the safety of embassy employees in the future.
