The corresponding agreement on the construction of a new gas pipeline was signed by the countries the day before. RIA Novosti reported this on January 23 with reference to the Nova news agency.

According to information provided in the Italian press, the largest oil and gas companies of Italy and Algeria signed the contract on the construction of the Galsi gas pipeline during the working visit of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

“We want to test new areas of this cooperation, strengthen it in the energy, political and cultural fields. We are committed to partnership to increase growth prospects for building bridges between the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and stabilizing the region, which is strategic for Italy and Europe,” the Italian Prime Minister stressed.

Her colleague, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune  added that the construction of such an object will allow transporting, in addition to hydrogen, ammonia and electricity. According to the political leader, this will make Italy a new supplier of fuel resources for the whole of Europe.

The Galsi gas pipeline will run along the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea: the length of its underwater path will be 284 km, Nova reports. According to Italian media, the agreement with Algeria will increase gas imports to 35 billion cubic meters per year (against 20 current ones); by 2025, this figure is planned to reach 50-70 billion cubic meters.
