Turkmenistan has large reserves of various natural resources, including gas and oil. For a long time, the country developed first according to the resource model, and then according to the industrial resource model. However, the dialectics of the development of the world economy and the experience of a number of industrialized countries have shown that in modern conditions, not only natural resources, but also innovation and education determine the progress of any country.<\/p>\n

The corresponding topic was considered by the permanent editor of CentralAsia.news, Chairman of the Union of Economists of Turkmenistan, member of the Coordinating Council of the International Union of Economists Yuri Aronsky.<\/p>\n

In his opinion, a series of global economic crises in the last decade has only accelerated the understanding that the growth rates of the modern economy and its qualitative structure are determined by the innovation and technological model of development. He stressed that science-intensive technologies and innovations are increasingly becoming the main tool for building economic potential in Turkmenistan today.<\/p>\n

The role of the oil and gas sector in economic development<\/h5>\n

Despite these trends and factors, the role of the oil and gas sector, especially in exports, remains one of the most significant. And here, too, there are large-scale changes based on innovative methods and digital solutions. So, if earlier most of the raw materials were directly sold at relatively low prices, now, by creating new high-tech industries, the country has begun to process most of the raw materials (oil, gas, cotton, others) into final export products that are many times more expensive on the world market than the raw materials themselves. And such development has become possible, primarily based on the income received in the oil and gas sector.<\/p>\n

Yes, Turkmenistan’s economy is still largely dependent on natural gas, the reserves of which the country is among the top four countries in the world, along with Russia, Iran and Qatar. Currently, the country is successfully solving the issues of diversification of ways of selling oil and gas resources, new gas pipelines are being built and the productivity of existing ones is increasing (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India, Turkmenistan-China, Turkmenistan-Russia, Turkmenistan-Iran gas pipelines).<\/p>\n

At the same time, the export of Turkmen natural gas is still limited by the capabilities of the pipeline system. In this regard, the Turkmen government has embarked on the construction of innovative enterprises for deep processing of natural gas in Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n

A plant for the production of gasoline from natural gas<\/h5>\n

We can give an example of one successful innovative project already implemented in the country in 2019 – the largest gas chemical production \u2013 the world’s first plant for producing gasoline from natural gas on an industrial scale. At this unique high\u2013tech enterprise, for the first time, the “distillation” of natural gas into liquid fuel – gasoline is carried out in large volumes. The cost of the complex is about $ 1.7 billion. The company provides employment for 700 people. This innovative project makes it possible to process 1 billion 785 million cubic meters of natural gas annually and produce 600 thousand tons of A-92 gasoline that meets the requirements of the Euro-5 standard, which is very popular on the world market. It also provides for the production of 12 thousand tons of diesel fuel and 115 thousand tons of liquefied gas per year.<\/p>\n

New investment projects<\/h5>\n

Diversification of production from hydrocarbon resources in the country continues. In addition to the complex described above, a complex for the production of polypropylene and polyethylene from natural gas and a plant for the production of carbamide fertilizers in Garabogaz are currently being built in Turkmenistan. This year, experts are preparing feasibility studies for the implementation of a number of new investment projects. Among them are the reconstruction of the natural gas processing and liquefied gas production facility at the Bagadzha field in the Lebap Velayat and the construction of an ethane processing plant and the production of polyvinyl acetate with a capacity of 55 thousand tons of products per year at the Central Karakum fields located near the Yilanli gas compressor unit in the Dashoguz Velayat.<\/p>\n

Gas supplies by sea<\/h5>\n

It should also be noted that following global trends, Turkmenistan is now actively working on the processing and sale of liquefied natural gas in the form of LNG, as well as its further transportation by sea through special terminals built on the coast in Pakistan or Iran, for example. This will give another impetus to the development of the oil and gas sector and the delivery of its products not only through pipeline routes, but also using special tanker ships with gas delivery around the world.<\/p>\n

Gas export growth in 2022<\/h5>\n

If we consider the macroeconomic indicators of Turkmenistan for 2022, it should be noted that the country’s GDP growth rate has reached 6.2%, and the volume of foreign trade turnover is $ 20.1 billion, which is significantly better than the results of 2021 (an increase of 32.9%). In 2022, as a percentage of the previous year, gas production reached 96.7%, and export deliveries in value terms increased by 61.4%. It should be noted that the increase in gas exports undoubtedly contributed to the further acceleration of economic growth.<\/p>\n

Access to major foreign markets<\/h5>\n

In general, it can be said that the Turkmen economy has been developing successfully over the years of independence and has already achieved the necessary stability and maturity inherent in the developed countries of the world by many criteria. And the oil and gas sector of the economy makes a significant contribution to this. Today, thanks to macroeconomic, energy independence, large reserves of demanded natural resources, a developed transport and logistics structure, as well as the introduction of digitalization programs and new innovative, ecological approaches, closer interaction with the environment, the country’s oil and gas enterprises are getting new good opportunities to enter the dynamically developing major Asian markets, European countries, the American continent and CIS.<\/p>\n
