On March 28, 2024, a regular meeting of the St. Petersburg Interdepartmental Commission on Names (Toponymic Commission) was held.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the year of the 80th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade, a number of streets and facilities in the Northern Capital will be named and commemorate the defenders of the city, home front workers and participants of the Great Patriotic War. In particular, the commission recommended that Pulkovo Park be returned to its original name, Hero Cities Park, under which it opened in 1989. With such an initiative, members of the society “Residents of Besieged Leningrad” appealed to the city government.<\/span><\/p>\n

The assignment of Toktogon Altybasarova (1925-2015) to the Center for the Promotion of Family Education No. 4 in the Vyborg district of St. Petersburg, who took care of 150 orphaned children evacuated from besieged Leningrad to the village of Kurmenty in the Kyrgyz SSR, was approved. The center is the successor to Orphanage No. 53, the only institution for orphans in the city that has been preserved since the Great Patriotic War in a historic building on Yaroslavsky Prospekt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two new streets will appear in the Moskovsky district, on the territory adjacent to the former Leningrad Meat Processing Plant. Maria Koshkina Street will be named in honor of the famous female sniper, a participant in the Great Patriotic War and the heroic defense of Leningrad, who worked before and after the war at the combine. And the name of Vladimir Peregudov Street will perpetuate the memory of the Hero of Socialist Labor, the designer of nuclear submarines. This street departs from the Moskovsky highway to the southwest next to one of the production sites of the special design bureau “Malachite”, in which V. N. Peregudov worked. Two new driveways in Strelna and streets under construction in the village of Pargolovo and in the new quarter of the Pushkin district will also receive names.<\/span><\/p>\n

New squares will also appear on the map of St. Petersburg. The square next to the “house of admirals” on Chapygin Street will be named Admiral Drozd Square in honor of the Vice Admiral who lived here, a participant in the Great Patriotic War and the defense of Leningrad, who commanded a squadron of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. Three new names of squares on the Petrogradskaya side will be associated with film directors Igor Maslennikov, Dinara Asanova and Vitaly Melnikov, who lived in the area and worked at Lenfilm. The name of the People’s Artist of the USSR Joseph Kobzon will be given to a square in the Vyborg district, on Lunacharsky Avenue in the alignment of Composers Street. The street names in this part of the district are dedicated to the theme of musical culture. Mamin-Sibiryak Square will be located in Sementsy, on the corner of Vereyskaya Street and Zagorodny Prospekt, near the house where the famous Russian writer lived.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Commission also approved the initiative of the Centralized Library System of the Vasileostrovsky district to assign the Children’s Library No. 6 named after V. V. Bianchi, an outstanding naturalist writer, a resident of Vasilievsky Island, whose 130th birthday is celebrated this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four St. Petersburg schools have received new names. Thus, a proposal was supported to assign secondary school No. 521 with an in-depth study of mathematics and computer science of the Krasnogvardeysky district named after the founder of cosmonautics K. E. Tsiolkovsky. The school bore his name back in the Soviet years, and the Tsiolkovsky Museum has been operating here since the 1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n
