The Russian Navy is dynamically developing on the basis of government programs, new technologies and the powerful base of Russian shipbuilding. This is confirmed by dozens of modern warships and submarines under construction, active development and mass production of multi\u2013purpose marine drones. It is no coincidence that the Western rating of Global Firepower military power puts the Russian Navy in first place today, and the US Navy in only fourth place.<\/span>
\nThe International Naval Salon (MVMS-2024) in Kronstadt on June 19-23 fully reflected the potential of Russian shipbuilding, the level of development and capabilities of modern weapons and combat control systems, navigation and communications of the Russian Navy, as well as new technologies and materials of the industry. Two floors of a spacious exhibition center, open-air platforms with products and the latest warships at the mooring wall of the naval base could satisfy the curiosity of the most biased specialist, a profile journalist or an enthusiastic visitor.<\/span>
\nAccording to my observations, the first production submarine of the Kronstadt project 677 (the fourth generation of non-nuclear submarines) and the first production corvette of the Savvy project 20380, bobbing on the cold waves of the Baltic, received the most ardent attention. Considerable interest was aroused by the layout of the newest large landing ship “Cayman” based on project 11711 \u2013 two such BDK are being built at the Yantar plant, and the Russian Navy will receive them after 2025.<\/span>
\nThe salon reacted to the unmanned malice of the day with a whole line of multi-purpose UAVs, surface and underwater marine drones of different ranges (up to 500 km with a payload of up to 1000 kg). The coastal power of the Russian Navy at the exhibition (and in the zone of its defense) approved coastal missile systems (DBK) “Bastion”, “Bal”, “Rubezh”, capable of effectively hitting sea and land targets. Another solemn chord was echoed in the souls of design specialists and sailors from different countries by high-precision (smart) missile and mine-torpedo weapons. For example, the legendary Tor air defense system, which guarantees the destruction of inconspicuous NATO cruise missiles at a range of up to 16 km, was convincingly present at the stands in several modifications at once \u2013 land, rail, sea and Arctic.<\/span>
\nThe BrahMos triad of supersonic cruise missiles, traditionally presented at the MVMS in Kronstadt, remains a living symbol of the Russian-Indian strategic partnership. Designed to destroy ships (including aircraft carriers) and enemy ground targets, the BrahMos missile (starting weight \u2013 3 tons, warhead \u2013 about 300 kg) has significantly increased its range since last year \u2013 from 290 km to 450 km. In the spring of 2024, the Indian Ministry of Defense concluded another contract with the manufacturing company BrahMos Aerospace (49.5% owned by Moscow and 50.5% owned by New Delhi) for the supply of attack missiles – for $ 2.5 billion (the amount reflects a high assessment of the reliability and effectiveness of weapons). The BrahMos-2 hypersonic missile is being developed, which will accelerate to Mach 7.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rapid response and scaling<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As a rule, the main achievements of the Russian defense industry at international exhibitions are not “highlighted”. And yet, the visible “tip of the iceberg” gives a vivid idea of the power of applied science, design Bureau teams and the ship industry of the Russian Federation. There is still a sense of the rapid response of the state and the industry to the challenges of the time. A gigantic construction of a new, high-tech Navy is underway.<\/span><\/p>\n

The black pearl of the Kronstadt salon can rightfully be considered the newest Kronstadt submarine of Project 677, the first production of the fourth generation of non-nuclear submarines. He has been in combat service with the Russian Navy since January 2024. It differs from the famous Varshavyanka of project 636 in smaller displacement and crew (only 35 people), high speed and “intelligence”, and most importantly \u2013 incredible noiselessness in the seas and oceans (a “black hole” squared). Kronstadt carries 70 percent of new design solutions (technological revolution). Experts note that in the underwater position, Kronstadt sees everyone, but no one sees it (lack of a sonar background). The main quality of the submarine is stealth, but the combat effectiveness of Project 677 has increased 2.5 times and due to decent ammunition \u2013 18 Kalibr missiles (or torpedoes \/ mines). Speed \u2013 21 knots, autonomy \u2013 45 days. The Kronstadt is designed to combat surface and submarine ships, defeat enemy coastal targets, conduct reconnaissance and protect maritime communications.<\/span>
\nInterestingly and importantly, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) provides Russian and foreign customers with a choice of a dozen high\u2013tech warships and submarines – with scaling in displacement, autonomy, and armament. For example, the stands attracted great attention of foreign military delegations to the submarine of Project 636 with the Club-S missile system (a recognized leader in its class in combat power, stealth and survivability), a series of compact Cupids and Piranhas, the ultra-small Triton and other masterpieces of the Russian defense industry. A similar choice is over water.<\/span>
\nThe perfection of the contours and high technologies, the powerful armament of the corvette “Savvy”, the first production ship of the project 20380, is truly impressive. This combat unit of the Baltic Fleet with a displacement of 2,200 tons and a length of 104 meters carries on board the Uran anti-ship missile system (8 PKR), the Kashtan anti-aircraft missile and artillery complex (32 missiles), artillery installations of 100 mm and 30 mm calibers (A-190 and AK-630), as well as a helicopter Ka-27PL. The purpose of the corvette with a crew of 100 people: the fight against surface ships and submarines of the enemy, support for amphibious assault with rocket and artillery strikes, patrolling the area of responsibility for the purpose of blockade (speed – up to 25 knots).<\/span>
\nThe newest project of the large amphibious assault ship (BDK) “Cayman” was constantly in the spotlight of specialists and other visitors to the exhibition. The ship with a total displacement of 8000 tons, a length of 150 meters, a full speed of 18 knots is designed to transport troops and equipment by sea and land on an unequipped coast during a naval amphibious operation, to set up minefields and sonar buoys \u2013 in ocean, marine and coastal zones. The Cayman is equipped with an integrated automated combat control system of the operational and tactical level, and will carry on board: six attack boats (10 paratroopers each), six landing boats with a payload of 45 tons, two transport and landing helicopters, UAVs, rocket artillery and anti-aircraft artillery complexes (four combat modules), radio equipment and sonar weapons, electronic warfare equipment. I repeat, the project is not divorced from the life of the fleet \u2013 two Cayman BDK based on project 11711 are already being built at the Yantar plant. There is a tendency to accelerate.<\/span>
\nThe United States and NATO are very concerned about the rapid growth of the “three whales” of the Russian Navy \u2013 missile surface ships (corvettes and frigates), submarines (nuclear and diesel-electric), marine drones and UAVs. As well as the high effectiveness of the combat use of these weapons in the zone of their own in the Ukrainian Theater of Operations. We are concerned about the changes in the Global Firepower military power rating, in which the first three lines have recently been occupied by the military fleets of Russia, China and North Korea \u2013 by a large margin from the United States in terms of the number of ships. The quality also turned out to be an American myth that crumbles under the Houthi missile strikes in the Red Sea.<\/span>
\nMeanwhile, during the exhibition it became known: in addition to the recently commissioned and under construction naval combat units, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) is conducting pre-contract work with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on 22 new ships. The Commander-in\u2013chief of the Navy, Alexander Moiseev, on the sidelines of the MVMS-2024, noted the strategic aspiration of the fleet to the Arctic – to expand operational capabilities and strengthen the security of 20 thousand kilometers of Russia’s Arctic borders. By the end of 2024, the fleet will receive the first ice-class patrol ship “Ivan Papanin” of project 23550 of the unique Arctic series. Such ships with powerful missile weapons, helicopters, drones and Manul landing craft on board will be able to perform high-latitude combat missions as part of groups and independently, overcoming ice fields up to 1.7 meters thick.
