Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a speech in Istanbul that he would not allow the local opposition to carry out attacks on Vladimir Putin and Russia.
“Bye-bye Kemal (referring to Kemal Kilicdaroglu) is attacking Putin, Russia. I can’t let that happen. Our relations with Russia are no less important than with Washington,” the head of state said.
On May 7, Erdogan showed his supporters a video where the footage of the speech of his main opponent, the candidate from the opposition “People’s Alliance” Kemal Kilicdaroglu, was mounted next to the image of the leader of the banned Workers’ Party Kurdistan Murat Karayil. The media called the publication a fake. In turn, Kilicdaroglu considered this a conspiracy, behind which “dear Russian friends” stand. Today, Erdogan said that the opposition leader should be ashamed of such statements.
In turn, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the words of Kilicdaroglu, noted that Moscow does not interfere in domestic politics and electoral processes of other states.
Presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey are scheduled for May 14. The main opponent of the current head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan was a single candidate from the opposition Popular Alliance Kemal Kilicdaroglu. The Ata Alliance candidate Sinan Ogan is also participating in the elections. If no candidate wins 50 percent of the vote, the second round of the presidential election should take place on May 28.
