The 4th meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Ghanaian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation was held in the capital of the Republic of Ghana, Accra. The meeting was attended by the Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations of the Ministry of Education of Russia, Usman Rassukhanov. During the event, the parties discussed the expansion of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including education.

Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Public Relations of the Ministry of Education of Russia Usman Rassukhanov noted the great potential of cooperation between Russia and Ghana in the field of education.

“Cooperation in the field of education between our states is currently at the stage of development and has great potential. Russian Russian Language Education Center has been established, thanks to which more than 150 Ghanaians were able to start learning Russian. I am glad to note that we already have the results of our joint work: the Center for Open Education in Russian and Russian Language Teaching has been created. The Ghanaian delegation took part in the international competition of the High–Tech Championship in Veliky Novgorod and showed a significant level of training of specialists,” Usman Rassukhanov stressed.

The delegation of Ghana visited Russia in September this year to participate in the High-Tech Championship. The country’s representatives in the international competition won two prizes (bronze medals) according to the competencies “Flying robotics” and “Neural networks and big data”.

Following the meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Ghanaian Commission, it was decided to prepare a bilateral memorandum of cooperation between the ministries in charge of education in the two countries.

The Ghanaian side confirmed its interest in developing cooperation in the field of general, secondary vocational and additional education. Russian Russian representatives expressed their interest in creating conditions in the country for studying the Russian language and general education subjects in Russian.

In addition, during the working trip, Usman Rassukhanov met with Mamle Andrews, Director General of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Ghana.

The Director of the Department of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation spoke about the vectors of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education, and also presented the International Humanitarian Project of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation “Russian teacher abroad”.

The representative of the department made a report on the role of competition policy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the implementation of the national project “Ecology”

The Conference of the African Competition Forum is the largest international event in the field of antimonopoly regulation in the African region. It includes 30 competition authorities of African countries and 4 supranational bodies, including the Competition Commission of the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

In 2023, the Conference was held in Serekunda (Republic of the Gambia). The agenda of the Conference included the issues of combating anti-competitive practices of transnational corporations, the role of competition in ensuring food security, suppression of cartels, antitrust regulation and sustainable development.

In his report, the representative of the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia spoke about the development of competition in the Russian Federation, as well as the key tasks of the national project “Ecology”, including reducing the volume of municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal, reducing the level of pollutants into the atmosphere, cleaning water bodies and developing a system of specially protected natural territories.
The role of the FAS of Russia as a regulator in the implementation of the national project is to ensure control over tariffs for services for the treatment of MSW, analysis of relevant markets for signs of anti-competitive agreements and the formation of an industry regulatory framework.

During the conference, meetings were held with participants representing the competition authorities of Gambia, South Africa, Angola, Ghana, Senegal, Cape Verde, Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco, Nigeria. The parties discussed in detail the issues of further development of cooperation between antimonopoly regulators of Russia and African countries, which was initiated within the framework of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in St. Petersburg in July 2023.

Recall that in July 2023, the Second Summit of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum was held in St. Petersburg. Within the framework of the meeting, negotiations were held between the head of the FAS of Russia Maxim Shaskolsky and representatives of the competition departments of South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia and the Gambia.

Help yourself first, and then dance in the center of innovative West African cuisine

The gastronomic scene of Accra usually consists of two establishments: “eateries” serving traditional cheap dishes such as fufu (made from crushed cassava, green bananas or sweet potatoes) with spicy tomato-based soup, and more expensive restaurants serving foreign cuisine.

Travelers to Accra, the capital of Ghana, can now see a new wave of chefs and entrepreneurs bridging the gap by focusing on local products and innovating. In the new restaurant and design center, the Mix, the main dish of West Africa, gari (granulated cassava root) is colored pink with beetroot and served with squid in passion fruit sauce.

It’s also worth looking at the eco-friendly food space in Accra; the Ghana Food Movement educational organization holds events throughout the year, including the branded Dine & Dance series, in which underused local ingredients, such as millet, which Ghanaians eat almost exclusively in the form of porridge, turn into completely different dishes. The meal is followed by a dance party, of course, in a truly Ghanaian manner. (Jessica Sarkody).

Since 2001, in order to popularize books and disseminate reading, UNESCO has been annually designated the “World Book Capital”. Officially, the Year of the Book will begin on April 23, on World Book and Copyright Day, approved in 1996.

Accra is the twenty-third city to receive this title since 2001 and follows Guadalajara (2022) and Tbilisi (2021).

During the year, various events aimed at promoting books and fostering a culture of reading will be held in Accra: libraries accessible to all segments of the population will be opened, seminars for writers and publishers will be held.

“Accra is pleased to become the book capital. This will give the whole world an opportunity to get acquainted with the culture of Ghana,” said the country’s Minister of Education Yau Osei Adutvum, congratulating everyone on winning the title of “World Capital of the Book”.

The city proposed to the committee a broad program aimed at marginalized groups with a high level of illiteracy, including women, youth, migrants, street children and the disabled. Measures to be implemented include strengthening school and community infrastructure and institutional support for lifelong learning in order to develop a reading culture. Supporting the publishing sector and other creative industries, the program also aims to encourage the development of professional skills to stimulate socio-economic transformation in the country.

The proposed Accra program aims to use the power of books to engage these young people as an effective way to educate the next generation.

The World Banana Forum (WBF) organized the first African Regional Commission in cooperation with Afruibana. This webinar brought together the main players of the African banana industry and laid the foundation for a fruitful dialogue on issues of shared responsibility and the duty of caution.

During this webinar, Joseph Owon Kono, President of the association, was accompanied by representatives of three producing countries, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Ghana.

He also shared his vision of the market and spoke about the efforts and initiatives that have been taken by manufacturers in recent years in the field of social, social and environmental policy.

Afruibana started by reminding how the African banana sector contributes to improving the living conditions of workers, their families and local communities. Its members develop infrastructure for access to basic services (water, education, healthcare, housing, etc.), and also contribute to the development of the local economic fabric by stimulating agricultural entrepreneurship. Similarly, initiatives are currently being implemented to change gender parity in management structures.

The World Banana Forum (WWF) is a platform for cooperation between the main participants in the global banana production and marketing chain to achieve an industry–wide consensus on best practices for sustainable production and trade. We are confident that cooperation is the key to change.

Afruibana welcomed the participation of trade union representatives from the three producing countries in coordinating the activities of the African Regional Commission. This approach is part of an expansion of active commitment on the part of both manufacturing companies and trade union representatives who act daily to promote dialogue.

The VBF unites retailers, importers, producers, exporters, consumer associations, governments, research institutes, trade unions and civil society organizations and helps them in finding rational ways to improve the situation in the banana industry.

The task of the World Banana Forum is as follows:

encouraging the cooperation of stakeholders to develop a rational approach to improving the situation in the banana industry; and
achieving an industry-wide consensus on best practices in addressing labor issues, as well as issues related to gender inequality, environmental impacts, sustainable production and the economy.

*Afruibana is a pan-African Association of Producers and Exporters of African Fruits.

Founded in 2011 by former Wall Street banker Edmund Poku, Ghanaian company Niche Cocoa produces cocoa products and chocolate for export and the local market. Niche Cocoa started as a small enterprise, and today the company is the largest fully integrated cocoa processor in Ghana.

Niche Cocoa founder Edmund Poku started working as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs after receiving an MBA degree. Shortly after, one of the Poku professors called him, urging him to continue working on his MBA thesis and establish a private cocoa processing company in Ghana. The stress of working on Wall Street quickly forced Poka to start rethinking his original business idea. Then he packed up and moved to Accra to open his cocoa business.

Niche Cocoa produces cocoa products and confectionery products for supplies to the global chocolate, ice cream and bakery industry. Semi-finished products include natural and deodorized cocoa butter, specialized cocoa mass, as well as natural and alkaline cocoa powder. At the confectionery Niche Cocoa is also a producer of refined chocolate, chocolate drinks and spreads.

The cocoa industry has long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy. It is currently the world’s second largest producer of cocoa beans after Ivory Coast.

When Niche Cocoa entered the cocoa processing market as a private domestic company, the industry was still in its infancy, and only the government and several multinational corporations processed cocoa locally. Ghana at that time processed only about 15% of the cocoa harvested in the country, and the rest was exported. The growth of niche cocoa was partly the result of its ability to successfully supply its cocoa products to several countries. He has done the work required to obtain various certifications, including Halal, Kosher, Fair Trade, Organic, FDA, Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and UTZ.

Since 2017, the cocoa niche has expanded further, gaining partial ownership of one of the largest smelters in Germany, which allowed the brand to gain access to European chocolate producers for end consumers.

While this model has mostly served niche cocoa well, barriers to entry for other local private processors remain high. Attracting money to a multinational industry, whether through private investment or banks, is often prohibitively expensive and difficult for those who do not have good connections or do not have a high level of capital. Obtaining permission to buy cocoa beans from the government is also difficult and expensive.
