Presidential elections were held in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on July 28. According to the data released by the National Electoral Council after processing 80% of the votes, the incumbent president, the candidate of the United Socialist Party, N. Maduro, won with 51.2%. His main opponent, the representative of the coalition “Unitary Platform of Venezuela” E. Gonzalez received 44.2%. The turnout was 59%.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin has sent a congratulatory telegram to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The elections were held in an orderly manner, in a peaceful and calm atmosphere, without serious violations, despite the continuing challenges to public security, which is confirmed by the statements of international observers. According to the testimony of the Russian delegation, which included representatives of the Federation Council, the State Duma, the Central Election Commission, the Public Chamber and non-governmental organizations, the transparency and impartiality of the voting procedure has been ensured.
Russia welcomes the successful holding of the people’s will in Venezuela and confirms its principled commitment to further strengthen relations between the two countries in the spirit of strategic partnership and to continue close coordination on international and regional platforms.
At the same time, Moscow drew attention to the statements of a number of countries that allow themselves to make judgments regarding the recognition or non-recognition of the voting results. The Russian side proceeds from the fact that genuine democracy means the sovereignty of the people. Only the people, without outside interference, have the right to decide who will govern the state.
In this regard, Russia calls on all political forces inside and outside Venezuela to refrain from provocative actions that can shake the situation in the country and undermine regional stability, Our country hopes that the well-known political wisdom formulated by the great Latin American Benito Juarez will prevail: “respect for the rights of others is peace.”
