Belarus intends to build its own terminal or port in the Murmansk region. This was announced to journalists by the Minister of Transport and Communications Alexey Avramenko before the final board of the department, BelTA correspondent reports.

“Recently, a delegation of the Ministry together with other interested parties returned from the Murmansk region. We are studying the sites there. At the moment, the Republic of Belarus has been offered three sites for the construction of a terminal, but we are also considering the construction of a Belarusian port directly,” Alexey Avramenko said.

According to him, the issues are currently being studied – where is the best territory in terms of infrastructure, what kind of cargo Belarus will be able to handle there. “Next, we will develop a strategic decision on the location and construction of the port in the Murmansk region,” the minister said.

The head of the Ministry of Transport added that a decision on the feasibility of building a port in the Murmansk region will be made this year.

Alexey Avramenko also said that last year export cargoes from Belarus were transshipped in 20 Russian ports. “For us, the strategic task is to have our own port, our own terminals through which we could handle Belarusian export cargo,” he stressed.
