Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant (NEVZ, part of Transmashholding JSC) has revealed plans for the presentation of a new shunting hybrid contact-battery electric locomotive of direct current, which is the first locomotive of this type in the recent history of Russian transport engineering. The presentation of this locomotive is scheduled by the plant’s management for August of this year, within the framework of the international exhibition “Promotion — Expo-2023”, TASS reported with reference to the technical director of the enterprise Vitaly Kinzhigaziev.

“The EMKA2 electric locomotive is capable of operating on sections without a contact network, on the charge that the locomotive receives during its stay on the electrified section of the railway. Such locomotives are designed for shunting work in large depots and at passenger stations of large stations where the use of diesel engines is undesirable,” the source told TASS, pointing out that the locomotive is 90% made of domestic components.

The Novocherkassk enterprise has also started preparing the production of a new Russian electric locomotive with increased capacity, which will stand on the rail lines of the Eastern polygon of the Russian Railways.

“The 2ES9 electric locomotive — a twelve—stage mainline alternating current freight locomotive — will be designed to provide driving of freight trains on electrified alternating current voltage 25 kV sections of the Eastern polygon of Russian Railways with a maximum speed of up to 120 km/h,” Kinzhigaziev said, noting that the new electric locomotive will surpass the serial Ermak, which is currently in use at this landfill, with increased capacity.
