Yaroslavl State University named after P.G. Demidov (YarSU) and the I.D. Papanin Institute of Biology of Inland Waters of the Russian Academy of Sciences will create a floating university for monitoring reservoirs of the Volga Cascade. This was reported to TASS by the press service of YarSU.

“The University on the water – similar to the floating universities of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia – will be opened in the “working” waters of the Institute of Biology of Inland Waters in Borok. Leading scientists of both organizations will invite students to expeditions on the university flagship – the scientific expedition vessel Akademik Topchiev – to monitor the reservoirs of the Volga Cascade,” the press service said, noting that good maneuverability and low draft allow the vessel to work in bends and in shallow water.

Joint projects on career guidance of young scientists, development of research topics for students, supervision of term papers and final qualifying papers are also planned. “The foundation of our cooperation is environmental monitoring. More specifically, it is training specialists in the field of technologies for monitoring the bioecological state of natural objects and preserving the resource potential of aquatic ecosystems,” Acting Rector of YARSU Artem Ivanchin told TASS.

In April, YarSU and the Institute of Biology of Inland Waters created a basic department of experimental bioecology in order to study the ecosystems of reservoirs of the Volga Cascade. The Institute is a member of the consortium “Upper Volga – Innovation Territory”. The opening of the basic department became part of the federal project “Priority 2030”.
