It is planned to deploy missile defense (ABM) in the CIS countries, said the Deputy head of the Russian Aerospace Forces for Armament, Colonel-General Yuri Grekhov, following the results of the 57th meeting of the coordinating committee on Air Defense under the Council of Defense Ministers of the Commonwealth countries, held in Tula.

“The integration into the regional air defense systems of forces and means capable of solving the tasks of aerospace defense, as well as the development and implementation of programs for equipping the air defense forces of the CIS member states with promising air defense and missile defense systems, does not stop,” said the general, who is the deputy chairman of the committee.

According to him, these “events are aimed at completing the practical implementation of interstate agreements on the creation of regional air defense systems in the regions of collective security and the international legal framework for cooperation within the framework of the CIS unified air defense system.”

To date, only Russia and Belarus have missile defense systems in the countries of the CIS unified air defense system – Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Russia’s missile defense system is represented by various anti-aircraft missile systems, including mine-based anti-missiles, as well as radar stations of the missile attack warning system. Belarus’ missile defense systems include the S-400 Triumph long-range complexes recently supplied by Russia, as well as their detection means.

According to the information on the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense, in the domestic classification, missile defense is primarily understood as a system of protection against ballistic targets, including from intercontinental ballistic missile warheads.
