During the business meeting, the head of the department discussed cooperation issues with his Abkhaz counterpart and invited members of the national team of the Republic of Abkhazia to participate in open championships and international tournaments on the territory of the Russian Federation, such as the BRICS Games, the Games of the Future and the Friendship Games.

“This is a unique competition format, and we invite the teams of Abkhazia to participate in all these events,” Oleg Matytsin said.

“I would also like to support the idea of holding a marathon on the territory of Abkhazia, which, I am sure, will become the country’s business card, demonstrating traditional Abkhazian hospitality to the whole world,” the Minister added. The Sukhumi Marathon will be held in October 2024. 2,500 runners, including from CIS countries, are expected to take part in it.

Oleg Matytsin stressed that Russian-Abkhazian relations in the field of sports are at a high level: “Our sports ties with Abkhazia continue to develop actively, close contacts are being built through sports federations. I will note the work of the federations of tennis, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, boxing, wrestling, sambo and weightlifting.”
