China has committed itself to the construction of a power plant with an installed capacity of 230 MW in Karabakh, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Elshad Iskenderov said at an event on the theme “Reassessment of Azerbaijani-Chinese relations: the way forward”, which takes place on April 22 in Baku.
“Azerbaijan and China cooperate in the field of renewable energy sources. China has committed itself to the construction of a 230 MW power plant in Karabakh. That is, our relations are based on a long-term perspective,” Iskenderov said.
According to the diplomat, Azerbaijan supports the “One Belt, One Road” project initiated by China, and the developing transport hub in the country will contribute to this project.
Iskenderov noted that there is currently a struggle between globalization and the protection of state sovereignty.
“The opportunities created by Azerbaijani-Chinese relations are based on three basic principles and various measures implemented so far to further develop these relations. First of all, I would like to note the role of the Silk Road in the development of this interaction. Currently, there is a struggle between globalization and the protection of State sovereignty. One of the ways to emerge victorious from this struggle is to respect independence, value mutual interests and take steps in accordance with state policy,” the Azerbaijani diplomat said.
Iskenderov noted that Azerbaijan, being a part of the Silk Road project, supports its promotion, and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is of great importance in terms of sending goods passing through the territory of Azerbaijan in various directions.
In turn, the Charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Azerbaijan, Ding Tao, noted that there is well-coordinated cooperation between Baku and Beijing in the field of alternative energy sources.
In addition, he noted, in 2023, the trade turnover between the two countries reached a record level of $3.1 billion dollars, which means an increase of 43%.
Azerbaijan also opened five trading houses in China, Ding Tao added.
Soltan Mammadov, a member of the Azerbaijani parliament and a member of the working group on Azerbaijani-Chinese interparliamentary relations, speaking at the event, said that China has always demonstrated a unified position on the issue of Azerbaijan’s independence, supporting it on all platforms.
“The processes taking place in the region show that the Middle Corridor (the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route running through China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan – ed.) has attracted the attention of a number of countries, including China. Since 2020, more than 2 million tons of cargo have been transported along this corridor. We have optimistic forecasts for the future. Our cultural ties with China are also at a high level,” the deputy added.
