The accession of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the Eurasian Economic Union would be a confirmation of the organisation’s success.
Evgeny Korenev, a candidate of historical sciences, associate professor at the Chernyshevsky State University and an expert at the Institute of Current and International Problems of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, shared this opinion.
‘There is a certain pressure from outside due to the fact that not everyone wanted Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to join the EAEU. At the very least, it would look like some kind of confirmation of the success [of the union],’ he said.
According to the expert, a number of unfriendly structures are working with the population, including in the information sphere to create a negative attitude towards the EAEU.
‘Therefore, the EAEU countries, too, for their part, should form the information agenda in a certain way, so that states such as Tajikistan, with which we are actively co-operating, do not have negative processes that would negatively affect the mood of residents,’ Korenev concluded.
Recall that since 2015 Tajikistan has been considering the expediency of the country’s accession to the EAEU.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly commented on the need and importance of the republic’s increasing co-operation with the Eurasian Economic Union countries. He also noted the successful development of relations within the organisation.
Last summer, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Mukhriddin, said that Dushanbe was studying the experience of other countries to make a decision on joining the EAEU. Then he stressed that the republic’s authorities were assessing the pros and cons of joining the organisation and studying the experience of Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
