On 18 June 2024, the CIS Executive Committee Office in Moscow hosted the third meeting of the Commission on the Rights of the Child (Ombudsmen) of the CIS Member States, chaired by the Russian side represented by the Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights, M.A. Lvova-Belova.
The Commission meeting was attended by members of the Commissions from the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic. Republic of Tajikistan, as well as the Commissioner for Children’s Rights of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, S. M. Rokhmonova (a candidate for membership in the Commission), the Secretary-General of the CIS, S. N. Lebedev, members of the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the CIS member States to the Charter and other bodies of the Commonwealth, the Commission on Economic Affairs of the CIS Economic Council, the Chairman of the CIS Economic Court, representatives of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS member States, and State authorities of the CIS member States.
The agenda of the meeting included 11 issues. Priority issues for discussion included: ensuring the rights of children with disabilities, cyber security of minors (protection of personal data), children’s safety as a priority in ensuring children’s rights: protection from violence and bullying, return and reunification of children who have lost parental care to the states of citizenship, upbringing and education of children in the boarding school system, monitoring the protection of the rights of children of migrant workers to education and medicine.
The meeting noted the work done over the past period, namely, that 10 international events on various issues relating to the protection of children’s rights had been held, bringing together members of the Commission, staff of the offices of the commissioners for children’s rights and experts in the protection of children’s rights. The Commission’s work over the past period was assessed favourably.
The meeting resulted in the election of a new Chairperson of the Commission on the Rights of the Child, A.R. Chynbaeva (Kyrgyz Republic), as well as co-chairpersons from the Russian Federation – M.A. Lvova-Belova and from the Republic of Belarus – A.N. Matyushonok.
In his closing speech, the Secretary-General of the CIS Lebedev S.N. wished the members of the Commission to maintain the positive dynamics of work for the next period.
The fourth meeting of the Commission on the Rights of the Child (Ombudsmen) of the CIS member states, chaired by the Kyrgyz Republic, will be held in November 2024 in Minsk (Republic of Belarus).
