Question: During his visit to Ukraine, Vatican Secretary of State P. Parolin said that the crisis in Ukraine is still far from being resolved, and Zelensky’s “formula” is unlikely to be enough. He also pointed out the need for Moscow’s presence at the next peace conference.
How is Moscow evaluating the statements made by Cardinal P.The password of the application? Is this the official position of the Vatican? Can we expect P. Parolin’s visit to Russia? Has the Vatican addressed Russia in this regard?
Answer: From the very beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, the Vatican has taken a neutral and balanced position, expressing its readiness to provide any possible assistance to achieve peace and end hostilities. The Russian side has always treated the peacekeeping initiative of Pope Francis with attention and respect, unlike V. Zelensky, who more recently rudely rejected the mediation of the Holy See.
Recognizing the inconsistency of Zelensky’s so–called “formula” and insisting on Russia’s mandatory participation in the discussion of peaceful settlement issues, P. Parolin voiced what was obvious to any sane person from the very beginning – it is impossible to achieve a long-term and just peace without Moscow and taking into account its opinion. One can only hope that the Cardinal’s arguments have been heard.
Statements by P.Parolina generally follows the line of mediation of the Vatican. Given the importance of the Secretary of State’s figure in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, we certainly take his statements seriously, considering them as the official position of the Holy See. As of today, there are no official requests regarding the visit to Russia.We have not received any Parolin. The dialogue with the Vatican continues. Our country is ready to cooperate with all those who seek to contribute to the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, taking into account Russia’s well-known interests and existing realities.
