On January 27, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting in Moscow with the Co–coordinators of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on the reform of the UN Security Council, Permanent Representatives of Kuwait and the Netherlands to the World Organization Tarek Albanai and Lise Gregoire-van Haaren.

During the meeting, the main focus was on the current round of the WFP within the framework of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. Sergey Lavrov emphasized Russia’s principled position in favor of well-adjusted reforms of the UN Security Council, which are designed to enhance the authority and effectiveness of this body, as well as to make it more democratic by expanding the representation of states in the Global South and East.

The parties noted that significant differences remain between the WFP participants on all aspects of the reform process. In the current situation, it is necessary to continue painstaking discussion of this topic in the current format of intergovernmental negotiations without setting deadlines in the interests of achieving the broadest possible agreement among the Member States.
