On June 25, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution entitled “International Decade for the Consolidation of Peace for Future Generations”, an initiative put forward by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, respected Emomali Rahmon. With this step, the Member States reaffirmed their collective commitment to strengthening peace, dialogue and intergenerational solidarity as the most important foundations for ensuring the well-being of future generations.
The resolution recalls the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, including the determination to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” and the commitment to resolve disputes by peaceful means. It also recognizes the importance of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace as a universal mandate for promoting a culture of peace and non-violence.
In accordance with the provisions of this resolution, the General Assembly proclaims the period 2027-2036 as the International Decade for the Consolidation of Peace for Future Generations. The goal of this Decade is to promote peace, promote dialogue and reconciliation, and foster intergenerational engagement — including between children, youth, and the elderly — in order to ensure that the needs and interests of future generations are taken into account in policy—making and decision-making processes.
The resolution welcomes the contributions of Member States, leaders and peoples who have contributed to the consolidation of peace, reconciliation, dialogue and national unity through inclusive political processes, confidence-building measures, post-conflict reconstruction and long-term investments in social cohesion. These examples of national experience, as noted in the resolution, serve as a valuable source of inspiration for present and future generations.
The resolution further welcomes the commitments made at the 2024 Summit of the Future, as well as the adoption of the “Pact on the Future”, in which Member States pledged to strengthen cooperation in order to protect the interests of future generations. It also notes positive developments in Central Asia and welcomes the efforts of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to resolve border issues through peaceful means, as well as the signing of relevant agreements.
The resolution requests the Secretary-General, specialized agencies, regional commissions and other UN structures to promote the implementation of the Decade in cooperation with Governments and relevant stakeholders. Member States, civil society organizations and other partners are invited to support the implementation of the Decade, as well as share best practices and knowledge.
It should be noted that the adoption of this resolution, put forward by Tajikistan in the UN General Assembly, comes at a time when millions of civilians in various regions of the world are facing security threats and armed conflicts. This undoubtedly reflects the peacemaking and unifying role of the Republic of Tajikistan and will further advance the global agenda for a culture of peace.
Moreover, this initiative, put forward by such a statesman as Emomali Rahmon, the leader of a country whose people, having survived the horrors of the imposed civil war, deeply value peace and tranquility, political stability and national unity and will never forget the bitter lessons of that national tragedy, is timely and in demand.
