On October 31, at the initiative of the Syrian side, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Compatriots Abroad of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) F. Mikdad.
During the conversation, the foreign ministers paid special attention to the dramatic development of the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone.
Sergey Lavrov pointed out the inadmissibility of the spread of armed escalation to Syria and other countries in the region. In this regard, he noted the unacceptability of Israeli airstrikes on the territory of the SAR, which have become more frequent against the background of events around the Gaza Strip. The Ministers emphasized the danger of attempts by external forces to turn the Middle East into an arena for settling geopolitical accounts in the current explosive situation.
They stressed the need for an immediate end to the bloodshed in Gaza, the resolution of all humanitarian problems that have arisen as a result of the hostilities and the transition to discussing a long-term settlement by political and diplomatic methods on a well-known international legal basis.
The Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the faithful implementation of the decisions of the UN Security Council on the Syrian settlement based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the SAR.
A number of issues of Russian-Syrian bilateral cooperation were considered.
