OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid arrived in Turkmenistan on October 31 to hold a meeting with the foreign ministers of the OSCE participating states in Central Asia, the press service of the international organization reports.
In Ashgabat, Helga Schmid will take part in the Forum of the OSCE Secretary General and Foreign Ministers of Central Asian countries, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The event will discuss border security issues, the effects of climate change and strengthening ties in the region.
During the visit, the Secretary General will also meet with Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Minister of Environmental Protection of the country Charygeldi Babaniyazov.
Helga Schmid visited Ashgabat in June. Then she presented President Serdar Berdimuhamedov with a certificate of accession of the city of Arkadaga to the project “Development of sustainable, green, climate-friendly cities with innovative solutions in the OSCE region” and an EcoPorts certificate awarded to the seaport of Turkmenbashi.
Helga Schmid discussed with the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov the provision of safe energy supplies to world markets and the rational use of water resources. The Secretary General also opened a new OSCE office in Ashgabat.
