The exhibition was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The project tells how the theme of the sea is embodied in the synthesis of musical and pictorial images. The exhibition presents unique items from the collections of two federal museums. The Russian National Museum of Music has provided art canvases, musical instruments and memorial items, scores written by famous composers. The exhibition tells about Alyabyev, Tchaikovsky and their appeal to the plot of Shakespeare’s “Tempest”, introduces the best examples of the museum’s rich collection of theatrical and decorative paintings from different historical periods. The subject range is complemented by exhibits from the biological, ethnographic, and art collections of the Museum of the World Ocean.

“This is an amazing exhibition. Paintings, costumes, musical instruments made using materials related to the sea – mother of pearl, seashells – were combined in one space. Together they create the very musical flavor, the music of the sea, which we want to talk about. Music accompanies us all our lives. In our museum, music sounds on the embankment, luxurious musical instruments are in the cabins of museum ships, because on long voyages, participants of scientific expeditions arranged poetry and musical evenings. The musical traditions of the Museum of the World Ocean are very strong,” said Svetlana Sivkova, General Director of the museum–reserve “Museum of the World Ocean”, inviting everyone to visit the exhibition “On the crest of the sound Wave”.

Svetlana Sivkova thanked the Ministry of Culture of Russia for the idea of holding joint exhibitions and assistance in their organization.

“We are pleased to introduce residents and guests of the westernmost region of Russia to the unique items of the richest collection of the Museum of Music. Sketches of scenery and costumes for famous operas immerse us in the depths of Russian culture. Posters of the middle of the XX century, as if on the crest of a sea wave, take us from era to era. The novelty of the project is that the uniform jacket of Fyodor Chaliapin’s daughter Marina, who served on the ships of the Italian passenger fleet, is presented here for the first time. I think that together with the World Ocean Museum we can be proud of this joint project,” Mikhail Bryzgalov, Director General of the Russian National Museum of Music, said at the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Visitors can see sketches of scenery, costumes for the opera “Sadko” created by Alexander Golovin, Boris Anisfeld, Alexander Benois, Fyodor Fedorovsky, Marina Sokolova. Musical editions and posters will be transferred to the middle of the XX century, when the most popular musical performances “Sevastopol Waltz” by Konstantin Listov and “Free Wind” by Isaac Dunaevsky thundered on the stage. The section is complemented by bright posters of concerts of the Central Ensemble of the Red Fleet Song and Dance of the USSR Navy, the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Baltic Fleet, etc. Also in the hall there are musical instruments made using materials related to the sea – mother of pearl, sea shells. The exposition includes Azerbaijani saz, ocarines (clay whistles in the form of fish), etc., as well as rare exotic instruments from distant countries (Indian bishkur, dung chen, ganlin).

The opening ceremony was attended by students of the branch of the CMSH – AII “Baltic”. The exhibition “On the crest of the sound wave” in the exhibition center “Warehouse” of the Museum of the World Ocean will run until February 26.
