On July 5, 2024, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev met with Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Belarus Igor Karpenko at the Moscow branch of the CIS Executive Committee.
The meeting touched upon issues related to the preparation of the next meeting of the Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Authorities of the CIS member states on September 19, 2024 in Minsk. The meeting will be timed to coincide with events on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the formation of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Belarus, as well as the scientific and practical conference “International Standards in the electoral process. Experience and development prospects”.
The parties also discussed the issues of holding the presidential elections in Belarus in 2025, in particular, the planned invitation of international observers. Sergei Lebedev noted that the CIS Executive Committee is ready to form a CIS Mission for possible monitoring of the upcoming presidential elections.
It should be recalled that the CIS Executive Committee has organized and conducted 12 observation missions in the Republic of Belarus since 2001. When monitoring election campaigns, the task of the CIS Observer Mission has traditionally been to assist in holding free and democratic elections in the Commonwealth.
