China is ready to increase gas cooperation with Russia, including on LNG, said Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui.
“In the current situation, a new perspective of Chinese-Russian gas cooperation is being demonstrated… We can activate it in all aspects and throughout the entire production chain. It is necessary to promote the early achievement of the design capacity of gas transportation of the eastern line of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. We support the implementation of the Russia-Mongolia-China gas pipeline project. We are ready to strengthen integrated cooperation with the Russian side in the field of pipeline and liquefied natural gas,” he said, speaking at the plenary session of the XX Anniversary International Forum “Russian Gas 2022: Turn to the East”.

The Ambassador noted that in the first 10 months of 2022, gas supplies from Russia to China increased by 173% compared to the same period last year.
“The East welcomes Russian gas. There is a sufficient market in the East to put Russian gas,” he stressed, highlighting the name of the forum “Turn to the East”.
The Chinese Ambassador added that Beijing fully understands the actions Moscow, for the protection of legitimate rights and interests in the international energy market, strongly condemns and considers unacceptable sabotage actions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“China will never allow external forces to interfere in energy cooperation between China and Russia,” the diplomat said.
Earlier, the executive secretary of the presidential commission on Fuel and Energy, the head of Rosneft, Igor Sechin, said that pipeline gas supplies from Russia to China in the foreseeable future will exceed 100 billion cubic meters per year, and the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) has the potential to become comparable to pipeline.
Gazprom supplies gas to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. The volume of deliveries through it from 2025 will amount to 38 billion cubic meters annually. In February 2022, a new long-term contract for gas supplies from the Far East was signed Russia to China, and taking into account this project, the total volumes of pipeline gas supplies will grow to 48 billion cubic meters in the future.

Now the Russian company is discussing with Chinese partners other promising projects for the supply of pipeline gas to China, primarily via the route through the territory Mongolia, the deputy chairman of the Gazprom Management Board, the head of Gazprom Export, said at the end of November Elena Burmistrova. The volume of supplies under the project — the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline — may amount to 50 billion cubic meters per year.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) noted in World Energy Outlook 2022 that it doubts the demand for Russian gas, which can be supplied to China under the planned construction of the Power of Siberia 2, as it believes that the growth in demand for this energy resource will slow down to 2% per year in the period from 2021 to 2030. According to the IEA, Chinese importers are actively entering into contracts for new long-term LNG supplies, and China already has a sufficient volume of contracted supplies to meet the projected demand until the 2030s.
